The following is a list of the concerts for 6th and 7th Grade Band Students throughout the 2016-2017 School Year.  Please make every effort NOW to put these on your calendar.  Excused absences from these events are very rare, must be made BEFORE the event and are at the DIRECTOR’S discretion.

The dates are as follows:


Aug.  25 - Music Parents Meeting.  All Parents – 7:00 p.m. Auditorium

Sept. 29 - 6th /7th Grade Bands 7:00 p.m. Auditorium

Oct 17 - Rock-A-Thon Gym 8 a.m. - 3 p.m. Monday - Teacher Work Day

Oct. 13 – 7th Grade Jazz/8-9 Jazz @ FMS. Auditorium 7:00 p.m.

Nov. 18/19 - C.B.A. Honor Band select 7th Grade Students only, PHS.

Dec. 1 - 6th Band/7th Band – 7:00 p.m. Auditorium

Feb. 10/11 - Solo / Ensemble Contest all Bands @ GMMS

Feb. 22 - Winter 6th/7th Bands and Orchestra Concert – 6:30 p.m. 6th Band/Orchestra  7:30 p.m. 7th Grade Band and Orchestra Auditorium

Feb. 28 – 7th/8th Grade Band Concert Auditorium

Mar. 9 – Fruita Cluster Jazz Bands – 7:00 p.m. Auditorium

Apr. 12 – FMS/F8-9 Pre-Festival Concert - 6th Grade and Jazz 6:00 p.m.  7-9 Bands 7:30 p.m.  FMS Auditorium

Apr. 20 - 6th and 7th Grade Bands Dist. #51 Colo. West Festival @ GJHS/CHS

Apr. 21 – 7th Grade Jazz Band Dist. #51 Colo. West Festival @ GJHS

Apr. 24 – 5th Grade Visitation Performances – 6th Grade Music   Auditorium

Apr. 24 – “Try-it” Night incoming 5th Grade Students 7:00 pm Café/Auditorium

Apr. 25 - 7th Grade Bands – Elementary Schools Tour


May 1 – CMU Jazz Festival Jazz Band – CMU

May 15 – Tentative Final Concert

These concerts are held in the Fruita Middle School Auditorium and will begin at 7:00 p.m. unless otherwise noted.  Your attendance is required at all concerts.  This does affect your grade.  You may also attend any other concert for extra credit.  I do NOT send out individual notices or reminders for each event, except for the TBA items.  Now that you have made your commitment to this schedule, future conflicts and stress will be avoided.

Every effort will be made to notify parents in a timely matter if there is an unforeseen change in times or dates of concerts.

Did you know?

The Fruita Middle Band is comprised of about 30% of the school’s overall student body. Currently, more than 36% of FMS 6th Graders are enrolled in band.

Here is some general information about the band program that might help answer some of your questions:


–  No prior musical experience is necessary.


–  There are no outside of school commitments in 6th grade.


–  Students can be in band AND athletics, dance, and cheer.


–  There are 3-4 concerts a year and a solo contest in the spring.


–  Classes meet daily and are grouped by like instruments.


Fun BAND Facts!


1.  96% of our nation’s astronauts performed in the fine arts during their school years, including Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon.  Mr. Armstrong was a talented euphonium player in middle and high school band.

2.  National Association of Secondary School Principals reports 66% of all college freshmen drop out after the 1st year.  In contrast, 96% of band students graduate from Universities.

3.   American Medical Association states that the #1 admittance to medical schools are students that majored in music as undergraduates.  Pre-med majors are #2.

4.  It is a fact that music students represent the top of the academic scale in our schools.  We know they are averaging 68 points higher on SAT exams.

5.  Admission criteria into most major universities put at the top of the list, commitment through the senior year to an extra-curricular activity.
